The redfin bully is one of the most attractive NZ native gobies, males in breeding condition develop vivid red-orange fin margins that are startlingly colorful for a native fish. Like other bullies, they are territorial bottom dwellers that guard rocky nest sites. They are found in clear, gravelly streams primarily in the South Island. ⚠️ Declining due to introduced brown and rainbow trout predation and habitat degradation. They require cool, well-oxygenated water and rocky substrate with caves for territory establishment. Feed live or frozen carnivore foods.
